Everything in this window works: open folders, cut and paste, rename, press Space for Quick Look, or .

Why File Explorer

Files, the way your hands remember.

Your hands already know it

Enter opens, F2 renames, Ctrl+X moves, Alt+Up goes up a folder. No relearning where anything is.

Windows at work, Mac at home?

The same file manager on both, so you stop thinking about which computer you’re on.

Drives that make sense

This PC lists your disks with drive letters, and the address bar takes C:\ and %APPDATA%.

Finder vs File Explorer

Everything you like about Finder. Plus what it’s missing.

Keep tags, Quick Look and AirDrop, and gain split view, Workspaces, the Tray, instant filters and an address bar you can actually type into.

Enhanced · The Tray

Collect now.
Sort later.

Files for one job are never in one place. Park them on the Tray as you find them, then move the lot in one go. Finder has nothing like it.

  1. 1

    Drop files on the Tray

From any folder, any window. They stay where they are for now.

  2. 2

    Go where they belong

Browse as normal. The Tray waits in the sidebar, counting.

  3. 3

    Press Move here

Everything lands in one go. Or Copy here, or drag them out.

  • Remembers up to 200 files
  • Follows files you rename or move
  • Kept after you quit
  • Clear forgets, never deletes
New in Enhanced

Two more reasons to switch.

Grab your latest download from any app, and turn whatever you copied into a file with one paste.

Recent downloads

Your newest downloads in a small list you can open from any app: click its menu bar icon or press ⇧⌘J. Drag one straight into an email, a chat or any other app.

Paste anything

Paste a copied picture, text or link straight into a folder as a file. A picture from a web page keeps its name, and Ctrl+Z takes it back.

The layout you know

Everything where you left it.

Tabs and split view

Ctrl+T for a tab, Ctrl+Shift+T to reopen one, and two folders side by side in a single tab.

An address bar that listens

Clickable breadcrumbs, or type a path, ~ or %APPDATA% and go.

Details and preview panes

Alt+P previews the file; Alt+Shift+P shows its size, dates and more.

Copying you can trust

One Replace or Skip question, a progress bar with Cancel, and Ctrl+Z to undo.

Extract All

Unzip with a familiar Extract All box, password-protected zips included.

Properties

Alt+Enter opens the Properties window you remember, with real tabs.

Plus the Mac’s best bits

Made for your Mac, too.

AirDrop, Blip or LocalSend Always on

Send files straight from the command bar with the app you already use. Switch it with one setting.

Quick Look Always on

Press Space to peek at any file, zooming from its icon.

Column view Always on

Finder’s columns, with arrow keys and a preview column.

Recents shared with Finder Always on

Home shows files you opened anywhere on your Mac.

Finder tags Enhanced

The same colour tags as Finder, with a Tags section in the sidebar.

Smart Folders Enhanced

Saved searches that look like folders, like PDFs from the last 30 days.

Rich previews Enhanced

Space on a folder shows its size and biggest files; on a zip, what’s inside.

Recent downloads Enhanced

Your newest downloads in a menu bar list you can open from any app, then drag one wherever you need it.

Paste anything Enhanced

Copied a picture, some text or a link? Paste it into a folder and it becomes a file.

Quick Actions Enhanced

Rotate, resize or convert pictures, or combine them into a PDF.

More in Enhanced mode: switch on only what you want in Settings › Enhanced.

  • Batch rename with a preview
  • Instant filter by type, date or size
  • Folder sizes on demand
  • Flat View of every file in subfolders
  • Workspaces that reopen your tabs
  • A Tray to collect files before moving them
  • Recent downloads in the menu bar
  • Paste a picture or text as a file

FAQ

Good questions.

Does it replace Finder?

No. Finder stays exactly as it is. File Explorer is a second way to browse the same files, and you can use whichever you like.

Do I need Windowsify too?

No, File Explorer works on its own. With Windowsify, Win+E opens it, and the bundle saves you money.

Is it careful with my files?

Copies ask once whether to Replace or Skip, deletes go to the Recycle Bin, and Ctrl+Z undoes moves and renames.

Where are the extra Mac features?

AirDrop, Quick Look, column view and shared Recents are always there. Tags, Smart Folders and the other Enhanced extras are in Settings › Enhanced, so you switch on only what you want.
